Petrified wood is the name given to a special type of fossilised remains of terrestrial vegetation. Petrifaction is the result of a tree or tree-like plants having been replaced by stone via a mineralization process that often includes permineralisation and replacement. It begins when a tree falls and is buried by sediment, over time, groundwater rich in minerals permeates the sediment and flows through the buried wood. As the water seeps through the wood's cellular structure, it deposits these minerals within the cells and tissues of the tree, and the organic material of the wood begins to decompose slowly, as this happens, the minerals carried by the water start to crystallise within the wood's cells, gradually replacing the organic material with stone while preserving the tree's original structure and details. A truly mesmerising and magical process.
